Kia Ora helped to organise and facilitate the first ever Startup Weekend in Tairāwhiti in April 2018. Startup Weekend is a global entrepreneurial education initiative supporting existing and aspiring entrepreneurs to create, validate and pitch their business model within 54 hours! This inaugural event was a huge success with over 50 participants, 20 volunteer mentors and over $50,000 of sponsorship contributed. Three teams went on to secure investment to continue developing their business model. Kia Ora played a significant role in helping to make this initiative a huge success.
Banqer is a New Zealand social enterprise with a mission to ensure all kids are prepared for the financial world ahead. Banqer is a financial education platform that transforms classrooms into a virtual economy. Teachers set up a currency and facilitate real-life situations over the course of the school year to enable students to learn about income, savings, debt, interest, tax, KiwiSaver, real estate, insurance and much more.
Kia Ora Consulting is working with Banqer to lead the work around Pēke Kā – translating the Banqer platform into te reo Māori and leading the engagement with Māori medium schools to make it fit for purpose. There are a number of various components to the project including translations, sector engagement, script development and video production, product testing and redesign, resource development, promotion and communications.
Kia ora Consulting has been leading a project with Activate Tairāwhiti and the Todd Foundation to scope and develop a community-led approach towards supporting the growth of entrepreneurship amongst young people in Tairāwhiti. The world of work and learning is changing rapidly for our young people. New technologies, globalisation, digitisation, and increasing social and economic divides are all at the centre of their future reality. The changing landscape has seen the rise of entrepreneurial education and experiential learning to better equip and empower young people for the future. A much higher value is being placed on core transferable soft skills or “enterprise skills” such as digital literacy, teamwork, presentation skills, risk-assessment, critical thinking, creativity and financial literacy.
Kia Ora has been playing a key role in coordinating community-led effort around developing entrepreneurial learning initiatives for our young people in Tairāwhiti. This has included working with a group of volunteer organisers and mentors to bring the Global Technovation Challenge to Tairāwhiti for the first time in 2019. Technovation is the largest and longest-running global technology entrepreneurship competition exclusively for girls aged 10 -18, where girls are tasked with identifying a problem in their community, and then challenged to solve it. Teams work together to imagine, design, and develop mobile apps, then pitch their “startup” businesses to local investors. We are currently working on some really exciting initiatives in this space so get in touch if you would like to know more!
Kia Ora Consulting is partnering with the Industry Training Federation to lead research around Upskilling Māori and Pasifika Workplace Learners which is being co-funded by Ako Aotearoa’s National Project Fund. The research project is a mixed-methods qualitative study that examines teaching and learning processes that enable successful outcomes, the incorporation of cultural values, and explores the workplace as a learning environment that supports ongoing knowledge and skill development of Māori and Pasifika employees.
Kia Ora Consulting has been working with Manaaki Tairāwhiti to transform the way social services are delivered to whānau in the Tairāwhiti region. This has included developing a business case proposal to central government to test and learn a new approach towards service delivery.
